Alice Nakamura holds a PhD in economics from the Johns Hopkins University and a BS in economics from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She is a Professor of Business at the University of Alberta in Edmonton Alberta Canada, where she has been employed since 1972.
Honours she has received include the McCalla Research Professorship, University of Alberta (1984-1985) and an Honorary Doctorate of Law, The University of Western Ontario, 1996. She also held the Francis Winspear Professor of Business at the University of Alberta (1994-1997, 1998-2001).
Her publications are mainly in the areas of labour economics, econometric methodology, productivity measurement, and social policy.
She was the 1994-1995 President of the Canadian Economics Association. She was a founding Board Member of the Canadian Econometric Study Group. She is a founding Board Member, and also served as the Academic Co-Chair for the years of 1994-2001, of CERF (the Canadian Employment Research Forum). She was a co-editor for the Journal of Human Resources and has served on the editorial boards for a number of other journals.
Alice is a long standing member of Statistics Canada's Price Measurement Advisory Committee; a member of Statistics Canada’s National Income Accounts Advisory Board; and has been a member of External Advisory Panels for the federal Treasury Board and for the Office of the Auditor General of Canada.
She served on the Axworthy Task Force on Social Security Reform, the technical advisory committees for New Brunswick Works, and the advisory committee for the Self Sufficiency Project conducted in British Columbia and New Brunswick. Her public service also including founding and serving as the volunteer president of the non profit CareerOwl Institute which is responsible for www.CareerOwl.ca.
She co-organized the 2008 World Economic Congress on National Accounts and Economic Performance Measures for Nations.
